Howe Avenue Elementary School
30 volunteers, led by coordinator Janet Ehrlich, are working individually with 3rd grade students once a week to improve the children’s reading skills. For 30 minutes the volunteer and student read together and a bond has grown between the tutors and the kids.
Howe Ave. School is one of the neediest elementary schools in the San Juan School district and volunteers are working with the children who are reading well below their grade level but don’t have anyone at home to listen to them read and help them in English.
Volunteer tutors include 7 high school students, many of whom are Shalom School graduates plus many parents and grandparents. Each of the volunteers has responded to the tremendous need to help these disadvantaged kids and to help the entire Sacramento community with something this simple that will have long term impact as these kids succeed.
