We are saddened by the loss of our dear friend and long time board member Sy Opper.  His leadership, great counsel, and generosity on behalf of our agency was invaluable. We will miss him greatly.

Our deepest condolences go to Estelle, Shelley, Michael, Gayle and Arlen and their families.

  • cinderella's Closet is now a jfs program

Safe In Sacramento, which initiated the Cinderella’s Closet project, has dissolved and asked Jewish Family Service/Second Hand Rose to take responsibility for the entire project, not just housing the gowns, as we’ve done for the past 18 months.

  • HomeForever Receives Recognition from Area Leaders

Congresswoman Doris Matsui made a special visit to meet with residents of Campus Commons to learn about Jewish Family Service’s HomeForever project.  Joining the Congresswoman was Sacramento County Supervisor Susan Peters, who presented Jewish Family Service with a Resolution signed by the entire Sacramento County Board of Supervisors, commending us on our work in assisting the residents in Campus Commons.  Congresswoman Matsui and County Supervisor Peters heard firsthand how HomeForever is making a difference in the lives of older residents. Both acknowledged the need to think creatively to meet the needs of the rapidly growing population of older adults and their families.

  • Our Cinderella Story
Two Non-Profits Make a Shidech (marriage) To Benefit Teens & JFS.

Upon learning that SAFE (School Activities for Everyone) was forced to close their Cinderella's Closet program due to a rent increase, we were on the phone to them immediately. We were trying to find a use for our upstairs "grand room" and often thought it would be perfect formal and bridal salon. After meeting with Cinderella’s Closet creator and Director amid tears of joy, we were able to combine our resources to keep this very important program functioning. JFS/Second Hand Rose has provided SAFE an office space in our facility to continue with their school programs.

Cinderella's Closet is the resource for complimentary Prom and Ball gowns for deserving students. To qualify they must maintain a 2.5 GPA and be eligible for subsidized lunches. They apply online and are issued a gift certificate and then they can visit our location to select their dream dress for their special event.

We would like to thank Dave's Design Center for the new carpet and padding and to Tom Capel for his generosity in time and effort delivering and installing the carpet. Our soon to be open gown boutique exists due to the dedication of SAFE volunteers.

Second Hand Rose will also be a retail resource of formal wear throughout the year for the general public. Students will visit the gown gallery to select their clothing with their gift certificate. In addition, bridal gowns, shoes, accessories and jewelry will also be available. Feel free to donate your gently used formal and bridal wear to our shop.

This is just another example of the fine work that Jewish Family Service does to provide assistance diverse services that we are able to provide to the residents of Sacramento.

And we lived happily ever after...

  • Schmoozers Circle Awarded a 4-Year Contract

The Schmoozers Circle respite program will most certainly continue to provide care and respite through June 2010!  The program is funded in large part by funds from the Older Americans’ Act and administered by the Area 4 Agency on Aging. In a competitive grant process this Spring, JFS was given the opportunity to continue the program for the next four years.
